Will a tree grow back if you grind the stump?

I am often asked to grind out a stump because the customer wants to make sure the stump doesn't grow back. I wish I could say that a stump will never grow back if you get it ground, but that's not necessarily true.

For some stumps, this might be true. Some wood species don't come back if ground out. In my experience, these are maples, pines, oaks, poplars, cedars, river birch, and Leyland cypresses. Other wood species can sprout from roots. I've known these trees to sprout after grounding them: hickory, cherry, gum, and holly trees.

Why spend money to get it ground if it might come back? Most of the time, after the tree is cut down and ground out, the tree is dead for good. It won't come back. I list the trees above that MIGHT come back. That doesn't mean they will.

At Stumpro, we try to grind every stump so it won't come back. You can read our blog post about how far down stump grinding goes here.

If the tree we grind does come back, Stumpro will return and grind out any more stump free of charge.
